The Crisp Smell of Fall is in the Air

Posted by Veronica On September - 19 - 2014

Maine-fall-foliage-540x359 When you live in Maine, there’s nothing like the smell and feel of fall in the area. If you’re relocating to Maine, fall can be a great time to do things outdoors and get to know your neighbors and your community before winter arrives. This short Maine activities guide can help you choose some Maine events that you’ll really enjoy, so you can feel more at home.

1. The leaves! They’re everywhere – and they turn the most amazing colors before they fall from the trees. You can take a drive on your own, or there are guided tours that help you see the best of the leaves that the state has to offer. You can also put on a jacket and your hiking boots, head to Bradbury Mountain State Park, Baxter State Park, or Mars Hill, and go exploring where you’re sure to see the beautiful colors Mother Nature has created. They’re lovely on the trees, but then they fall and produce a gorgeous, mosaic carpet that crunches under your feet. It’s a wonderful, magical time of year, and the leaves are just a part of that.

2. If you like apples, fall is the right time for you. Pies, ciders, juices, and just the plain, sweet apples themselves are all available in abundance when fall air comes to Maine. You don’t need to go to the grocery store to get them. You can do that anywhere. When you’re relocating to Maine, one of the many things to look forward to is the apple picking and cider tasting at local farms and orchards, like Randall Orchards or Sweetser’s Apple Barrel and Orchards. It’s a great way to get out and experience nature, and can also help you meet your neighbors and make new friends.

3. Fall in Maine means the pumpkins are back. Whether you celebrate Halloween or not, pumpkin carving can be a lot of fun. It’s a great thing for a family to do together, and it’s also an excellent choice for singles who want to meet other people. You can carve something simple, or there are stencil kits that allow you to make elaborate designs and unique creations out of almost any size pumpkin. Of course, there’s also pumpkin pie, and just about everything comes in pumpkin spice flavor. It really changes everything about the way the day feels, and that crisp, cool air only adds to the magic. Farmers Markets all over Maine have pumpkins you can choose from, so you can get started carving one right away.

4. Last but not least on the Maine activities guide is some clam chowder. It’s practically a staple, and one of the Maine events you have to try in the fall. You can have it any time of the year, of course, but it’s perfect for the fall weather. When the days get a crispness to them and the nights turn chilly, you know it’s time to curl up, be cozy, and have a bowl of clam chowder. It will warm you up, it tastes amazing, and it’s a great comfort food, as well. A number of restaurants like Gilbert’s Chowder House offer it, or you can make it right at home.
