Portland, Maine: Ringing in 2015

Posted by Veronica On December - 24 - 2014

Dip-and-Dash-2-620x400If you’re going to be in the Portland, Maine area for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, there are plenty of fun events you can get involved with. Families have options, as do couples and singles. With so many great things happening, the only problem you might have is deciding which event you want to go to. Fortunately, a lot of them are happening at different times, so you can go to more than one if you start early and prepare ahead of time. Here are a few options you’ll definitely want to check out:

1. Polar Bear Dip & Dash
Portland’s East End is home to this great December 31st event, where you can run into the water and take a freezing cold dip. It’s exciting, and an excellent way to help raise awareness and funds for climate change. Plus, you’ll get serious bragging rights from being brave enough to do it. If you want to participate in the 5K warm-up run, you can start registering at 9am. The run actually takes place at 11am. The dip into Casco Bay happens at noon, and you don’t have to be in the race to take the icy plunge. There are prizes and a afterparty to enjoy, too.

2. New Year’s Eve Charity Gala
If you’re looking for something a little more upscale, (and a bit warmer), you can head to Boone’s Fish House & Oyster Room in Portland for an evening of music and fine dining. By sure to make a reservation, since you won’t be the only one wanting to ring in the New Year with a five-course dinner and some great music from The Jason Spooner Band. You’ll be helping a good cause, too, as the proceeds go to No Kid Hungry: Share Our Strength, which is working to put a stop to childhood hunger.

3. Comedian Bob Marley
Laugh your way into the New Year and forget your holiday stress with a great comedy show. This is the 15th year Marley has hosted this fun event, and the show is getting more and more popular with people who know it’s not healthy to take everything so seriously. It starts at 7pm, and if you can’t make it on New Year’s Eve or you have other plans, there are also shows being offered on December 26, 27, and 28.

You can find masquerade parties, clam drops, bonfires, and more, all in and around the Portland, Maine area on New Year’s Eve, so there’s always something fun to do. There are many adult-only events planned, where you can dance the night away and celebrate with a drink of two. If you’re looking for something fun to do as a family, you’ll also have choices that include minors, so you won’t have to feel like your kids are missing out. No matter what kinds of activities you enjoy, New Year’s Eve is a time to let go of the old year and appreciate all that the new one can teach you.
