Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Maine Home

Posted by Veronica On April - 29 - 2015

rental-home-spring-cleaning-alh-podlandSpring in Maine is a time to get ready to say goodbye to the cold weather and welcome some warmth for the first time in months! But it’s also a time to deep clean your house. Whether you live in Portland or a nearby suburb, you can use these tips to make cleaning your home a little easier this spring.

Keep the Sand and Moisture at the Beach

When you live in Portland, visiting the beach is a given. But this means you often track sand into your house, leaving a gritty feeling on the floor. While sweeping or vacuuming will fix this, you can prevent the issue altogether by ensuring everyone uses their towel to knock the sand off their skin before they enter the house. Keeping welcome mats or throw rugs near the doors to your home also makes it easy for you to get rid of the sand that ends up in the house.

If you’re tired of having wet bathing suits around the house, put them all in a trash bag after the beach. Then dump the bag’s contents into the washing machine, press “rinse only,” and then hang them to dry outside. Of course, you can wash as needed after this, but this trick is faster than running a regular cycle every time you visit the beach and will keep the wet bathing suits off the floor.

Go Green and Save Money

You can easily make your own cleaning products. Not only is it cheaper, but it’s also better for your home and the environment to use nontoxic products that do not contain harsh chemicals. The following are a few recipes for simple, natural cleaning products you can make yourself:

  • Create glass cleaner by combining 1.5 cups of vinegar with 1.5 cups of water in a spray bottle.
  • Wipe down the stainless steel in your kitchen with a mixture of 0.5 cup of vinegar, 2 cups of water, and 2 tablespoons of baking soda.
  • Remove laundry stains and clean your shower with a spray bottle filled with equal parts water and vinegar, mixed with 3 tablespoons of dish soap.
  • Clean your toilet by turning the water off and pouring 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda into the bowl before scrubbing the surface with a toilet brush.

You can add essential oils in your favorite scents to any of these cleaning mixtures. This way, you get a nice fragrance without the chemicals that many store bought cleaning products come with.

Clean Up the Exterior of Your House

First impressions are important, which is why you should keep the exterior of your property clean. This way, visitors will immediately take note of how tidy your house looks this spring, and of course having great curb appeal will help if you’re trying to sell your house.

So don’t forget to:

  • Spray the outside of your house with water
  • Fix up paint or even repaint when necessary
  • Clean your gutters
  • Trim your tree branches
  • Fix any loose boards on your deck
  • Repair loose railings on your porch or balcony
  • Replace missing roof shingles

Once you put these tips into practice, you should feel particularly proud of your house this spring!
